Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
