Arne Slot Insists He Is Safe and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was understandable for questions to be raised about his position after a further heavy defeat versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in 12 matches, representing the team's poorest streak after being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were dominated by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing evening at their home ground.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I have got significant support from the top,” the coach stated.
“It would be nice to reverse this trend and earn three points obviously but if you are working as a coach and underperforming then it's typical that people question you.”
He continued, “I am OK with my position. It is not the first time I’ve been in a tough spot but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with Club Management
Upon being questioned to provide details on his dialogues with the club's leadership, Slot said:
“There's regular dialogue. They are supportive to the team and to me and those talks happen but they don't phone me constantly each day to say they have faith in me.”
He further stated, “During our regular exchanges I feel the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them since this game yet so let’s see.”
Recurring Problems and Player Reaction
The manager lamented known shortcomings from his team in their Champions League defeat, specifically wasted chances and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I do not. I’m saying that to everybody,” Jones said.
“It is unacceptable. I don't have to wait to reflect. I’m past being angry internally. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the phrases.”
He added, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the club I love. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen Liverpool all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team experiencing a phase of this nature with performances this poor.”
He stated, “But we continue to wear the crest on our chest. And until that badge is removed, we'll continue to compete.”
“Our aim is to get this team return to the top, prove again what this club is about and why people call it the greatest side in the planet.”
“But right now, we’re in the shit and it needs to change.”
