Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Missing key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel MuƱoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that virtually secures them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight passage to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Moment
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season proved no match even for a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were further depleted by the news that Mateta and MuƱoz are out with leg problems.
Control Established from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
