Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated fury after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and asserted they should be taken into custody and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Message That Provoked the Dispute
The video footage, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who in the past served in military or intelligence roles.
"Similar to us, you all made an oath to safeguard and defend this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can reject illegal orders, you can refuse unlawful commands, you have to reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute orders that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."
The Former President's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement reportedly provoke a heated response from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he wrote: "This is really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their comments cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives React
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a combined statement censuring the comments.
"Violent politics has no place in America," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our United States with great loyalty and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and urge House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical social media posts and retract his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the statement stated.
Representatives' Strong Response
The representatives who participated in the video also published a response.
"We serve as veterans and security experts who love this United States and swore an oath to protect and support the national charter of the United States," they said. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or incitement will deter us from that sacred responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to restate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their protection as they carry out their vow to the constitution and obligation to follow only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "Every American must come together and condemn the ex-president's calls for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Further Governmental Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's statements and published on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of government members."
He added: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, every Representative, all citizens ā irrespective of political affiliation ā should censure this without delay and without qualification."
The Conservative official justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is historic in the nation's past."
