Our team is analyzing images and video circulated this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the site of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.

Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
