Information Available Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with several in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
