Israelis have gathered across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled state commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the families of people who died in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held throughout the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to review the terms of the proposal.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the talks said that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.

The representative explained the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the deal.

He added that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war management of the area

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square previously, young a woman - whose family member survived the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - explained: "No location seems like home now and until all the hostages return none of us will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can relax anew. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.

Outside the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to show their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "We must do any agreement needed for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."

Research now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the war to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.

Gaza Situation

At the location of the gathering, mourners gathered to remember the victims.

From that location, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.

In the urban center, attacks were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the evening falls, the dread appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, shared.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who places his head on me all night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."

Humanitarian Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.

A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis said another two dead people had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the southern area, medical staff stated.
