He battled the legal system and justice triumphed.

A couple of months subsequent to being handed a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “destroy” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now appears headed to prison.

Imminent Incarceration

The adjudicated plotter – who's been under residential detention in his mansion while a series of legal procedures and petitions unfold – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the coming days, amidst growing speculation that he will be sent to a notorious top-security penitentiary.

Past Remarks on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the far-right former military man displayed little mercy for Brazil’s prison population.

“Why should we give those scoundrels a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be screwed, end of story. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to wind up behind bars, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Prison Facility Speculation

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has horrified backers, several of whom this week toured the facility in an apparent bid to prevent the judiciary from transferring him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, said he expected the elderly figure to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal ailments – the result of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 political campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is extremely serious. He cannot to manage if they send him to Papuda … It will be awful,” he commented, who also worried about packed cells and the condition of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells containing forty prisoners: “That’s almost one meter squared per inmate.

“We talked to the inmates and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the terrible cuisine,” continued the senator.

Allies Speak Out

The senator isn't the lone figure voicing opinions prior to the ex-leader's predicted imprisonment.

Writing in a prominent daily, one more backer, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and alleged Brazil was about to see “the largest political injustice in its history”.

“This is an injustice that erodes the hearts of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided Public Reaction

It is possibly correct given the significant backing Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. However his expected incarceration has also pleased the feelings of numerous others who believe he ought to be jailed for conspiring to block his successor from becoming president – and even plotting to have him murdered.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the current president's political party, stated: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. No one wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to receive proper treatment – but proper treatment while incarcerated. He cannot persist being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time celebrating the harsh conditions of convicts, had suddenly woken up to their entitlements. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently argued that human rights are not for criminals – decided to visit a prison to find out what circumstances are actually like,” he remarked.

“He is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, demeaning handling”.

Possible Prison Facilities

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which now contains about thousands of detainees, his more likely destination appears to be a adjacent penitentiary for officers and other “special” inmates known as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a far cry from the comfort Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the spectacular leader's home, around a short distance away.

According to information, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – approximately the size of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 square meter restroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre terrace. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a TV and even a minibar in his room as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” information suggested.

Ideological Comments
