Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these medications should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become starving," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
