Plans for Putin-Trump Summit Postponed Days After Budapest Talks Suggested

There are "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a White House official has declared.

Recently the US president indicated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Budapest in the coming fortnight to examine the war in Ukraine.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the administration clarified the two had had a "productive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The administration withheld additional specifics on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Background Context

Trump had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit during a call with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts claimed his meeting with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with sources suggesting the president had pushed him to give up significant territories of eastern Ukraine as part of a agreement with Moscow.

Nevertheless, on Monday the American president embraced a truce plan backed by Ukraine and EU officials to freeze the hostilities on the current front line.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Russia has consistently objected against pausing the present battle positions.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Lavrov said on this week, implying that halting hostilities would only amount to a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of comprehensive conditions that encompass the acknowledgment of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.

The Ukrainian president said talks regarding the current lines were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Moscow was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the provision of distance-capable munitions to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently preceded rumors that the United States was preparing to send long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

Zelensky asserted it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had turned out to be a "significant input" in negotiations", he added.
