The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Instance in Two and a Half Decades.

For the first time in 25 years, every region of California is facing water scarcity. This significant achievement comes on the heels of grueling years marked by below-average rain that exacerbated blaze threats and pressured its enormous farming industry.

A Chart Indicates An Absence of Dryness

Thursday's report from the national drought tracker illustrated that the entire state is free from dry or drought conditions. This shift was driven by weeks of significant storms that helped fill major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville well above their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a climate scientist.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

The path to this point involved intense and deadly winter storms that pummeled the state in 2023, leading to extensive inundation, blackouts, and deaths. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Until late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the beginning of January washed away those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

Yet, hydrologists note that being out of drought is not the same as complete water security. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.

This mountain snow, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Hydrology managers stress that it is premature to draw conclusions for the coming year.

“What we are observing right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a state water resources manager. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map indicates no dryness, the focus now shifts to sustaining this positive water situation for the rest of the year.
