On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an audacious start to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
