The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
It might not have been at the same level as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – deriving from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
