Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to ensure the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

What next for both teams?

Everton: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
