Vehicle Fleeing Police Crashes into Tampa Bar, Leaving Four Dead and 11 Injured

An speeding car that was fleeing law enforcement crashed into a crowded nightspot in the early hours on the weekend, claiming the lives of four individuals and wounding 11 in a historic district of Tampa, known for its entertainment scene and visitors.

Aerial surveillance team with the Tampa law enforcement agency observed the vehicle driving recklessly on a highway at about just after midnight after authorities said the silver sedan had been seen street racing in another neighborhood, according to a police department statement.

The state road police caught up with the vehicle and tried to perform a maneuver that involves striking a back fender of a fleeing vehicle to cause it to spin out, known as a pit, but it was ineffective.

Highway patrol officers “ended pursuit” as the vehicle raced toward the historic Ybor City area near the city center, Tampa police reported. Eventually, the driver lost control of the car and struck over a dozen individuals near the bar, officials said.

Three victims died at the location and a fourth victim died at a hospital. As of the next day, a fifth casualty was hospitalized in critical condition, and 8 other victims were being cared for at area medical centers but were listed as stable, authorities said. 2 additional individuals experienced minor harm and refused treatment at the site.
