Why Real Madrid Have 'Complete Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid history in a crucial Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a quarter-final place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.
Reports would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, every day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his debut.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize fans might be surprised to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the option to play for either country at senior international level.
According to international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are monitoring his progress with interest.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to play for the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the club pursue future success.
Following his notable contributions so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said following the win at Manchester.
